Chin Augmentation
with Implants

What is Chin
Augmentation?

Chin augmentation with an implant is a surgical procedure that enhances the projection, width, and definition of the chin — improving facial balance, strengthening the jawline, and refining the profile in a way that no non-surgical treatment can reliably replicate. The chin is a defining architectural element of the face: when it is underprojected or recessive, it weakens the entire lower face, shortens the visual length of the neck, and disrupts the harmony between the nose, lips, and jaw.

At The Face Institute, chin augmentation is performed using high-quality, anatomically shaped solid silicone implants selected and sized through careful pre-operative analysis of the patient's facial proportions. The implant is placed through a small incision either inside the mouth or in the natural crease beneath the chin — positioning it directly over the chin bone and beneath the periosteum for a stable, natural result that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding anatomy.

Chin augmentation is one of the most impactful facial procedures relative to its simplicity — transforming the proportions and character of the lower face through a single, well-planned intervention. It is frequently combined with rhinoplasty, as the chin and nose exist in a critical aesthetic relationship, and with neck liposuction or a deep plane facelift for a comprehensive lower-face rejuvenation.

Why Choose This
Procedure

Chin augmentation delivers one of the most significant transformations in facial surgery relative to its scale — permanently rebalancing the lower face through a single, well-planned procedure.

01

Permanent Facial Balance

A properly sized and positioned chin implant permanently corrects underprojection — restoring the proportional relationship between the chin, nose, and lips that defines a harmonious, well-balanced face.

02

Defines the Jawline

Chin projection anchors and frames the entire jawline. Augmenting a recessive chin visually sharpens the jaw, reduces the appearance of jowling, and lends a more structured, defined quality to the lower face and profile.

03

Lengthens the Apparent Neck

By projecting the chin forward, augmentation increases the cervicomental angle — the visual relationship between the chin and throat — creating the appearance of a longer, more elegant neck even without any direct neck procedure.

04

Anatomically Shaped Implants

We use anatomically contoured solid silicone implants in a range of styles and sizes — selected through precise pre-operative facial analysis to match each patient's skeletal structure, soft tissue, and aesthetic goals for a result that looks and feels entirely natural.

05

Discreet or Hidden Incision

The submental approach places the incision in the natural skin crease beneath the chin, where it heals invisibly. The intraoral approach leaves no external scar at all. The choice between the two is discussed at consultation based on individual anatomy and preference.

06

Transforms Rhinoplasty Results

The nose and chin exist in a critical aesthetic ratio. A recessive chin makes the nose appear disproportionately large, while a well-projected chin naturally diminishes nasal prominence. Chin augmentation is frequently the procedure that completes or elevates a rhinoplasty outcome.

FAQs

Common
Questions

Have a question not answered here? Bring it to your consultation — our surgeons take the time to answer everything, thoroughly and honestly.

Am I a good candidate for chin augmentation? +

Good candidates have a chin that is underprojected relative to the rest of the face — visible on profile as a recession behind the vertical line dropped from the lower lip. This may present as a weak jawline, a face that appears bottom-heavy, an indistinct neck-chin junction, or a nose that looks disproportionately large due to the lack of chin counterbalance. Candidates should be skeletally mature (typically 18 or older), in good health, and have realistic expectations about the result.

What type of implant is used? +

We use solid silicone implants — the most widely used and well-studied material in chin augmentation. Solid silicone is soft yet firm, mimics the feel of natural tissue, and is available in a range of anatomical shapes and sizes to match varying skeletal structures and aesthetic goals. Unlike porous implants, solid silicone does not allow tissue ingrowth — making it straightforward to reposition or remove if ever required.

Submental or intraoral incision — which is used? +

Both approaches are valid and produce equally excellent results. The submental approach — through a small incision in the natural crease beneath the chin — gives slightly more direct visibility and control during implant placement, and heals to a virtually invisible scar. The intraoral approach leaves no external scar whatsoever but carries a marginally higher risk of infection due to the oral environment and slightly less precise pocket control. The appropriate approach is discussed at consultation based on anatomy, patient preference, and whether the procedure is being combined with others.

Will the implant feel or look unnatural? +

A correctly sized and positioned implant is indistinguishable from the patient's own anatomy in both appearance and feel. The implant sits over the chin bone beneath the periosteum — integrating naturally with the overlying soft tissue. Patients and those around them consistently describe the result as simply a stronger, better-defined version of the patient's own face. Over-sizing is the most common cause of an unnatural result, and we guard against it through careful pre-operative measurement and implant selection.

What is recovery like? +

Swelling, tightness, and some numbness around the chin are expected in the first one to two weeks. Most patients are comfortable being seen socially within 10 to 14 days, though residual firmness and swelling continue to resolve over four to six weeks. A soft diet is recommended for the first week to minimise movement at the chin. Where a submental incision is used, sutures are removed at 5 to 7 days. Full implant integration and final aesthetic result are typically seen at six to eight weeks.

Is chin augmentation better than chin filler? +

For patients with meaningful chin underprojection, a surgical implant provides a permanent, stable, and anatomically precise correction that chin filler cannot replicate. Filler in the chin migrates over time, requires repeated treatment, and — in higher volumes — can cause tissue irregularity and a widened, poorly defined result. Surgery, performed once and correctly, delivers a cleaner, more proportionate outcome with no ongoing maintenance. For patients with minor deficiency or who wish to trial the aesthetic effect before committing to surgery, filler can serve as a temporary preview.

Can chin augmentation be combined with rhinoplasty? +

Yes — and this is one of the most powerful combinations in facial surgery. The nose and chin are evaluated together as a proportional system: a recessive chin makes the nose appear larger, while augmenting the chin restores balance and can significantly reduce the perceived size of the nose without touching it. Many rhinoplasty patients benefit substantially from simultaneous chin augmentation, and we assess this relationship routinely at every rhinoplasty consultation.
