Ear Reshaping

What is
Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes, repositions, or reduces the ears — correcting prominence, asymmetry, or structural irregularities that have caused self-consciousness, often since childhood. It is one of the most psychologically impactful procedures in facial surgery, with patients frequently describing a profound improvement in confidence that extends well beyond the cosmetic result.

At The Face Institute, otoplasty is approached with a thorough understanding of auricular anatomy and a commitment to results that are symmetrical, proportionate, and entirely natural. The goal is never to produce ears that look operated on — it is to produce ears that simply look right, sitting harmoniously alongside the face without drawing attention to themselves.

The procedure addresses the most common concerns: prominent or protruding ears caused by an underdeveloped antihelical fold, an overly deep conchal bowl, or a combination of both. It can be performed on patients from the age of five — once the ear cartilage has reached near-adult size — making it one of the few aesthetic surgical procedures appropriate for younger patients, with transformative and lasting benefits at any age.

Why Choose This
Procedure

Otoplasty is one of the most rewarding procedures in facial surgery — delivering permanent, natural-looking results and a level of confidence that patients of all ages describe as life-changing.

01

Permanent Results

Unlike non-surgical treatments that fade or require maintenance, otoplasty produces a permanent structural correction. Once the cartilage has been reshaped and secured, the result is stable and enduring for life.

02

Natural Ear Contour

Our surgical philosophy prioritises results that look anatomically correct — ears with natural folds, proportionate projection, and smooth contours that complement the face without ever appearing operated on.

03

Addresses Both Ears Simultaneously

Both ears are treated in a single procedure, with meticulous attention to bilateral symmetry throughout — ensuring the result is balanced and harmonious from every angle.

04

Suitable from Age Five

Because ear cartilage reaches near-adult size by age five, otoplasty can be performed on younger patients — allowing children to benefit socially and emotionally before school years become a source of distress.

05

Discreet Scarring

Incisions are placed in the natural crease behind the ear, completely out of sight from the front. Once healed, the scar is invisible in everyday life and entirely hidden by the ear itself.

06

Profound Confidence Impact

Prominent ears are a frequent source of teasing, social anxiety, and self-consciousness — particularly in children and adolescents. Otoplasty consistently ranks among the procedures with the highest patient satisfaction and the most significant impact on quality of life.

FAQs

Common
Questions

Have a question not answered here? Bring it to your consultation — our surgeons take the time to answer everything, thoroughly and honestly.

What age is appropriate for otoplasty? +

Otoplasty can be safely performed from around the age of five, when the ear cartilage has reached approximately 85 to 90 percent of its adult size and is still sufficiently pliable to reshape well. Many parents choose to have the procedure done before their child starts school to prevent the social difficulties that prominent ears can cause. Adults of any age are equally good candidates — the anatomy and technique are the same, and the results are equally permanent.

What concerns can otoplasty correct? +

Otoplasty most commonly addresses prominent or protruding ears — caused by a shallow or absent antihelical fold, an overly deep conchal bowl, or a combination of the two. It can also correct ear asymmetry, reduce ear size (macrotia), refine an irregular or overly large earlobe, and address ears that protrude at an uneven angle. Each case is assessed individually, as the specific anatomical causes vary from patient to patient.

How is the procedure performed? +

The procedure is performed through a small incision in the natural crease behind the ear, giving access to the cartilage. Depending on the anatomy, the cartilage is scored, folded, and secured with permanent sutures to create or deepen the antihelical fold and set the ear back at the appropriate angle. Where the conchal bowl is too deep, excess cartilage may be reduced. Both ears are treated simultaneously, and the result is assessed intraoperatively to ensure symmetry before closure.

Will the ears look natural after surgery? +

Natural results are the foundation of our approach. We aim to create ears with well-defined anatomical folds, balanced projection, and proportionate positioning relative to the head — ears that simply look correct, not ears that have visibly been operated on. Over-correction — where ears are set back too far and appear pinned flat against the head — is a common sign of poor technique that we actively avoid through careful intraoperative assessment and conservative correction.

What does recovery involve? +

A padded head dressing is worn for the first 5 to 7 days to protect the ears and maintain their position. After dressing removal, a soft supportive headband is worn at night for a further four to six weeks — particularly important during sleep to prevent the ear from folding forwards. Swelling and bruising typically resolve within two weeks, and most patients are comfortable returning to normal daily activities within 7 to 10 days. Contact sports and activities that risk catching or bending the ear should be avoided for at least six weeks.

Are the results permanent? +

Yes — otoplasty produces permanent results. Once the cartilage has been reshaped and secured with sutures, the new ear position is stable for life. There is a small risk of partial recurrence in the early post-operative period if a suture loosens before full healing occurs, but in the vast majority of cases the correction is permanent and requires no further intervention.

Will the scar be visible? +

The incision is placed entirely in the natural skin crease behind the ear — an area that is not visible from the front or even the side in normal circumstances. The scar heals quietly in this concealed location and, once fully matured, is imperceptible in everyday life. There is no scarring on the visible surface of the ear.
